According to the abundance of headlines in recent times, Samsung, LG and even Sony are working on foldable phones. Moreover, Motorola is among one of the many others that are working on prototypes, which we previously reviewed the Motorola Razr V4. Based on the latest updates, there has now been granted a patent that could fix any potential deformities of Motorola upcoming foldable smartphone.

As we learned, Motorola is now working on the flexible nature of OLED displays. In general, folding OLED panels multiple times can ultimately lead to deformities in the flexible area of the panel. As a result, the deformity would ultimately affect the user experience. Today, a new Motorola’s patent filed back in 2016, details the presence of a hinge. In details, the patent would include a temperature sensor and a heating element.

Furthermore, the sensor and element purpose is to increase the temperature of the OLED panel around that area. Also, they allow the display to return to its usual position whenever a deformity occurs. Moreover, Motorola claimed that the patent includes a unique module explicitly designed to track if the display gets folded or not. Besides, the patent introduced a backup battery, which records how long the panel has been in the folded position. Also, the process still works even when the device is off. When it exceeds the time limit, the display will enter the recovery mode as soon as its unfolded.

Motorola foldable display, when will we see it?

Motorola is yet to reveal any working prototypes of the concept detailed in the patent. However, the solution certainly looks like something that could work in real-life scenarios. Meanwhile, the Chicago-based brand is yet to publicly announce plans to introduce a foldable smartphone that could take on Samsung next year. As a result, the project could still be some years before the company makes use of its latest patent. Keep updated with us for more technology and goodness!
