First 5G iPhone with Intel Modem Can Hit the Market in 2020!

Previously, we have reported about Apple switching from Qualcomm to Intel for their iPhone modems. As their next move, it seems like the US manufacturer has chosen Intel for their first iPhone with 5G connectivity. According to our source, the 5G iPhone is going to run on the Intel XMM 8160 5G modem, which can debut in late 2019. In details, this processor is going to be the replacement to the old XMM 8060 modems. Furthermore, Intel is going to release this modem in North America first and later in other countries from Europe, Africa, Asia Pacific, etc.

On the other hand, the new model is going to be multi-mode. As a result, it can support 2G, 3G, and 4G networks as well as 5G. Moreover, it also comes with EN-DC too, which allows this modem to support 4G and 5G networks simultaneously. Besides, it has support for standalone as well as non-standalone specifications of 5G New Radio (NR) standard. Intel states that the XMM 8160 5G modem can provide peak speeds of up to 6Gbps via bandwidth of 800MHz, and up to 4.7 Gbps via bandwidth of 200MHz.

For now, Apple is currently using Intel for the modems in their 2018 iPhone lineup. The series now includes the newly debut iPhone XS, XS Max and the more affordable iPhone Xr. However, they are reportedly not going to use the company’s Bluetooth and Wi-Fi chips for the 2020 model. From what we gather, Apple could be the “main volume driver” for its modem. Moreover, Intel also told The Verge that their “5G customer engagements and roadmap have not changed for 2018 through 2020. We remain committed to our 5G plans and projects.”
