6GB RAM for smartphone – Is it a must to update?

RAM (or Random Access Memory) is one of the most important components to run a smartphone. So how much RAM is enough for our handset to work smoothly? Maybe 6GB RAM?

Before discussing advantages and disadvantages 6GB RAM can bring us, we need to know what RAM is first. As we mentioned, it, together with CPU, GPU, and ROM, is the most essential part of a phone. If CPU processes instructions, GPU displays the information on your screen and ROM holds the apps and logic, RAM is the one that connects all of them together. In other words, everything running through the CPU will be loaded from the ROM and plopped into RAM. Then, if the RAM capacity is bigger, it’s gonna make things ready to be run or loaded much faster.

So, imagine that a 6GB RAM smartphone will be produced next year, what pros and cons should we know?

1. Great overall performance:

In general, with such huge RAM, of course the machine will be able to deliver great performances for all areas like play games (high-end ones like Asphalt 8, Nova 3, and so on will not be a problem), running heavy apps, etc.

2. Maintaining the invisible items well

Good news is that bigger RAM enables you to switch to use background processes (invisible apps or items working in the phone, or which you aren’t actively interacting with) quickly without lag or delay. Furthermore, 6GB RAM will help juggling “service” processes like downloads and background music playback to be less “miserable”. We mean your device will not have to struggle much to maintain good performance while downloading an app update or so.

3. Catching up with modern technology

As people’s demands are increasing, technology is also trying to develop non-stop. Many chip manufacturers have been researching and will produce processors capable of more than octa cores or 64 bits which are totally able to make use of 6GB RAM just to let your handset work more properly and effectively. Therefore, some of you may think this amount of RAM is not necessary, but it’s not gonna hurt, right?!

4. Supporting the future

At this point, we want to talk about operating system (OS). We know a smartphone would not stick with only one OS forever, but once updating it with a newer version, we’re pretty afraid of lag. For example, someday you want to have your 2GB RAM phone running perfectly on Android Lollipop changed to run on Android 6.0 Marshmallow or even Android 7.0, you should be prepared for a laggy machine. However, in case of larger RAM, it will handle the software much better and give a greater impact on your actual experience.

5. BUT… huge RAM means “expensive”

Yes, we guess this is the most obvious drawback of 6GB RAM. Nonetheless, we also think it is reasonable, especially in the initial stage. 6GB RAM will be new and super strong, so it deserves standing out among 2GB, 3GB or 4GB RAM smartphones in terms of prices. Though, you may not need to worry much because once 6GB RAM phones become popular, the prices will be cut down automatically.

In conclusion, 6GB RAM has 4 advantages and 1 disadvantage. 2016 is coming closer and we will see many launches of 6GB RAM devices soon. But, now, we would like to listen to your thinking. Share with us whatever you feel about the topic.
