The LG G2 is one of the best deals in the Philippines in the upper price segment. Basically it had better specs then the Samsung Galaxy S4, but LG sold the G2 at a more attractive price. LG G3 vs Samsung Galaxy S5

Design

Both smartphones, the S5 and the LG G3 are plastic smartphones. For both spec-packed smartphones, Design is surely not the main selling point. Smartphones like the HTC One (M8) will surely have an edge on LG and Samsung in terms of design.

The LG G3 sports an 5.5 inch screen, which makes the device larger then the S5 in nearly every dimension. The leaked specs show that the G3 G3 is 4mm longer, 2mm wider and 0.8mm thicker.
Apart from the phablet like screen, the design of the LG G3 is pretty average. There is a minimal chance, that there will be a metal rear, but there is a much bigger chance that it will be full plastic like the S5. One Design Change from the S5 is that similar to the LG G2 all buttons will be on the back of the smartphone.

When it comes to design the S5 is in line with the S4, in that ist has a full plastic body. Samsung gave the rear of the S5 a more textured look, to make if look like faux leather but it still looks like plastic. LG created a real innovation for the G3. The new LG smartphone will be the first smartphone ever to utilize an QHD screen, which is similar to four 720 p displays in one. Even though the G3 has an extremely large screen at 5.5 inch, LG achieves to fit in an extreme high pixel density with 534 ppi on the display. The phablet will have an 2,560 x 1,440 pixel resolution, which is the same resolution as a 27 inch i mac – that is pretty impressive what LG achieves there.

The S5 uses an Super AMOLED Screen. AMOLED Screens tend to have much better black levels compared to even high end LCD displays and the screen quality of the Galaxy S5 is impressive. Samsung offers very beautiful colors and good black levels. Overall the G3 QHD display has higher resolution and pixel density compared to the S5. The S5 has a 1,920 x 1,080 pixels resoltution with a pixel density of 432ppi on the 5.1 inch screen.

Winner: LG G3. Both phones have clearly very high quality displays. The LG G3 has with its 2,560 x 1,440 pixel and a density of 534 ppi a significant advantage on the S5. As well the size of the 5.5 inch screen is much better to view movies or just videochat with your friends. If you like smaller screens the 5.1 inch super AMOLED of the Samsung phone is definitely still on of the best choices in the Philippines.

Galaxy S5 vs LG G3 Hardware and Specs

Both smartphones use the most powerful mobile processor on the Philippine market available at the moment, the quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 with Krait 400 Technology and Adreno 330 GPU.

The LG G3 and S5 Snapdragon 801 are both clocked at an impressive 2.5 Ghz. The Snapdragon is a juiced up version of the Snapdragon 800 used in the LG G2. Using the Krait 400 processor technology the processor is sigificantly faster, more then 30% compared to the 600 series of the Qualcomm Snapdragon series.

Both smartphones use LPDDR3 RAM, which is not only faster but also is good to save battery power. The LG G3 has a full 1 GB more RAM then the S5 though. RAM and virtual memory managment is normally the biggest slow down for Android devices. We can be sure the extra 1 GB of RAM will show signifcantly in benchmarks and every day use.

The battery life on both smartphones is pretty similar with 3000 mAh on the Lg phone vs 2800 mAh on the S5. Like mentioned before the Snapdragon 801 is very power efficient, so in terms of battery life both phones should be roughly equal.

One thing that is not 100 percent confirme yet, is if the LG G3 has expandable memory. The memory of the LG G2 was not expandable, but maybe LG learned from past mistakes.

So far LG announced only a 32 GB version of its new smartphone, which is not a good sign for expandable memory via micro sd, since normally higher spec basic version, have no micro sd. The S5 in comparison comes with 16/32/64 GB of internal memory and is extendable cheaply via micro sd.

Winner: LG G3. While both smartphone come with the same processor, the big advantage of the LG G3 is the extra 1 GB of RAM. The 3GB of Ram will give the G3 a clear edge in performance on the S5 but also on HTC ONE (M8).

LG and Samsung have strategically different approaches when it comes to the cameras in their Flagship smartphones. While we can be sure that both phones take very good pictures in easy light conditions, the differences really show with harder conditions.

The Galaxy S5 camera uses an in house innovation by Samsung the, ISOCELL sensor with 16 MP and LED flash.. Samsung promises that the ISOCELL sensor can achieve higher sensitivity levels without increasing levels of image noise. Since the S5 launched in the Philippines already we have seen pictures and are pretty impresses. The S5 definitely has one of the best smartphone cameras on the market.

The LG G3 utilizes a BSI sensor, probably the newest Sony 13 MP sensor including optical image stabilisation. With the optical image stabilisation the user can have longer camera exposures without the risk of blurry pictures. LG just announced another very exciting spec for the LG G3, a laser autofocus system. The laser will detect the depth of the object you want photograph and significantly increase the time between pressing the camera button and taking the picture. The big advantage of using a laser here is much improved speed and precision compared to optical systems. Also the laser will help to improve pictures in low lighting.

Winner: S5. This has been a very close race, especially because the LG G3 has yet to launch. We have seen a lot of examples and have taken pictures with the Galaxy S5 ourselves. The S5 has most definitely on of the best smartphone cameras on the market. In the past LG’s smartphone cameras have not always been elite in its segment, especially compared to the Nokia Lumia series. As well the S5 has a 16:9 ratio sensor while the LG G3 cuts the in the sensor, getting you 9.6 megapixel pictures effectively.

Overall Winner:

LG G3. The main reasons for this decision are the very 2,560 x 1,440 pixel resolution QHD display with the same resolution as the 27 inch macbook. Also the LG G3 a full 50% more RAM with 3GB compared to the S5 which will definitely make an impact in performance.

The real decision factor for a lot of users will be the pricing though. The real success of the LG G2 was that it launched significantly cheaper then the Galaxy S4 at better performance levels.

LG needs to follow that strategy with the G3 to position themselves against Samsung but also the upcoming iPhone 6. Rumors are that the LG G3 could be a full 7500 PHP cheaper then the S5, which is a lot.

It is about time that Cherry Mobile created a competitor for the very popular MyPhone Rio budget smartphone with the Cherry Mobile Omega Spectrum. Most smartphone manufacturers make their most revenue with in the budget smartphone segment. Now Cherry Mobile is fighting back with the Omega Spectrum which has the same specs as the MyPhone Rio, at least on paper. At a price of only 4,999 php, you get a a 5-inch 1280 x 720 HD IPS screen, Dual SIM Dual Standby, 8 MegaPixel autofocus camera with LED flash, 2 MegaPixel front cam, 1GB RAM and quad-core processor. We will compare the Cherry Mobile Omega Spectrum vs MyPhone Rio and see which one is the Top Budget phone in the Philippines.

Omega Spectrum vs MyPhone Rio

Design

The Design of the Omega Spectrum is very simple and elegant. The phone is all black with glossy plastic framing the screen and a matte back cover. This features make the phone feel more expensive then it is with its price of sub 5k. There are not much surprises when it comes to the layout with the 3.5mm jack at the Top and the USB port at the bottom. The Android navigation keys on the bottom of the smartphone are not illuminated possibly to lower the price. One minor critique point is, is that the 8 megapixel camera on the rear protrudes a bit from the back of the device. That puts the lens of the camera to higher danger of scratches and damage when you put the Omega Spectrum flat down.

The MyPhone Rio is when it comes to design the opposite of the Omega Spectrum. While the Cherry Mobile Device has a real simple design, the Rio’s design is loud and powerful. The Rio is available in a lot of colors and sports an ABS shell around the device. Through the shell the Rio design looks a lot like a unibody polycarbonate build. The MyPhone Rio reminds a lot on the popular Nokia Android Phone, the Nokia X, including the easily removable back. Overall the Rio has a good build quality and feels very solid in the end. On top of that the designers really showed love for details, for example the earpiece is the same color as the device and the has a LED notification light. One critique point about the MyPhone Rio is that the rear of the device is very easily scratched. Some users reported scratches exposing the white undergound after only one week of normal usage.

Winner: Tie. While the Rio is more loud and colorful the Omega Spectrum is simple and elegant. Both smartphones have small critique points and so its up to your personal taste which style you like more.

Display and Screen

Both smartphones come with an IPS 5-inch display and a HD resolution of 720 x 1280. To get a IPS 5 – inch display at this price point of under 5000 php is great and a big advantage of both phones.

The 5-inch 1280 x 720 HD IPS screen of the Cherry Mobile Omega Spectrum is protected by Dragontrail glass including free screen protector. The Omega Spectrum display quality is impressive. The colors are shown crisp and beautiful and it looks good from almost all viewing angles. The device does not have an auto brightness function but if you increase the brightness to high outside it works very well.

The My Phone Rio comes as well with an 5 inch IPS Display with a 1280 x 720 Resolution. The In Flight Technology (IPS) makes sure the screen is nicely viewable from all angels, and is definitely an improvement over the TFT displays of a lot of other budget smartphones in the same price range. This being said, the display of the MyPhone Rio screen’s quality is less then perfect. The display of the Rio shows less then good contrast levels, and the colors could be much brighter, especially compared to more expensive IPS displays.

Winner: Cherry Mobile Omega Spectrum. While both displays come with 5 inch IPS displays with 1280 HD resolution the quality of the Spectrum is definitely better. On top of that you get Dragontrail Glass to protect the screen and make it more responsive, while the screen of the Rio is less then perfect.

Hardware and Specs

While both Smartphones have a quadcore processor with 1.2 Ghz and 1GB of Ram, the one on the Spectrum is a Broadcom vs the Mediatek of the MyPHone Rio. While the display quality was the sacrifice the MyPhone made to achieve this price, for the Omega Spectrum its the processor. All quad-core processors are not created equal and thats the same with the Broadcom BCM 23550 and the Mediatek. Using the Cherry Mobile Omega Spectrum users will notice a bit of lag while navigating, probably the Broadcom is running on its edge powering the HD display. The Omega Spectrum scores 13708 points on Antutu and you can play games like FLappy Bird or even Dead Trigger 2 without Lag.

The MyPhone Rio utilizes a 1.3GHz quad-core Mediatek MT6582M processor with around 1GB of RAM. While the first version of the Rio still showed some lags while navigating, the new version of the RIO shows smooth navigating. It shows also good performance with more advanced games like Asphalt 8 and Dead Trigger 2. And yes the Antutu Score is with 16853 more then 3000 points higher then the Omega Spectrum’s score.

Both phones come with 4GB internal memory which is expandable via micro-sd up to 32 GB. Both smartphones sport a 2000 mAh battery. When it comes to battery life the lower powered processor of the Omega Spectrum turns into an advantage. The Cherrry Mobile Omega Spectrum lasted around 6 1/2 hours during battery rundown tests, where we looped video until the battery dies, till it hit 20% battery life. That means you can use the Omega Spectrum a full day with moderate use. For the MyPhone Rio, with 50% brightness and WIFI plus full volume on, the battery died completely after 6 hours and 47 minutes. That means you get around 8 hours of battery life with moderate use, better bring your powerbank.

Winner: MyPhone Rio. The 1.3GHz quad-core Mediatek MT6582M is simply stronger then the Broadcom quad core processor of the Spectrum and that shows with 3000 points in the Antutu score. The Spectrum is a not distand second though, especially considering that you get more then a full day battery use while the MyPhone Rio died after 8 hours of usage.

Camera and Pictures

Both devices, the MyPhone Rio and the Omega Spectrum come with an 8 Megapixel Rear Camera and 2 Megapixel Front Camera.

The 8 Megapixel camera on the Omega Spectrum delivers pretty average pictures and videos. Close up shots are good as long as the lightning is bright enough, but the camera has LED Flash so pictures in the dark are not that bad. With the 2 megapixel front camera, it is enough for video chatting with skype or taking selfies. One minor flaw is that there is a small lag of a second after opening the camera app.

Because of the price of the Rio users might assume that the quality of the Rio’s camera is average as well. But we were surprised, as long as there is good lightning the camera makes very good shots with a lot of detail and good colors. In low lights the pictures suffer a bit, but are still very acceptable. Same as the Omega Spectrum, the Rio has a 2 MP front cam for videochatting and Selfies.

Winner: MyPhone Rio. While both Phones sport an 8 Megapixel Camera, the MyPhone Rio’s camera takes significantly better pictures overall. Still with the Omega Spectrum you will be able to take averag pictures and good close up shots.

Winner Overall: Tie. While we normally prefer to choose a clear winner, both the MyPhone Rio and the Omega Spectrum have their distinct advantages and come with the same price tag at 4999 PHP. The Omega Spectrum is a simple and elegant beauty with very good 5 inch display and long battery life of more then a day. The Rio is more colorful and can compete on a stronger processor and a better camera. Both phones have minor flaws like the very easily scratchable rear of the myphone rio and the protruded camera of the Omega Spectrum but for 4999 PHP we can easily recommend both smartphones.
