CyanogenMod to be renamed to Lineage OS !

CyanogenMod is a custom version of the Android operating system. It’s here to offer a ‘better’ version than Google can provide, with more features and more control for the hardcore user.

WHAT IS CYANOGENMOD ALL ABOUT ?

CyanogenMod has been around since the very beginning of Android, today it is actually known as one of the longest and most popular custom operating system. The company decided to change its name as the firmware reportedly suggested it. The former Cyanogen Inc. Co-Founder Steve Kondik believed that CyanogenMod could run into an intellectual property. Steve Kondik didn’t mince words in what is now viewed as his parting statement from Cyanogen Inc. earlier this month.

In that statement, though, he alluded to the potential intellectual property issues the software might face if it was reorganized under a new non-profit corporate entity, and so the possibility of a new name was raised. It seems that the name has been decided upon: LineageOS Or Lineage Android Distribution, it could apparently be either. While the name is still subject to some debate, an official repo bearing the LineageOS name has popped up. The title on the page is Lineage Android Distribution, so perhaps LAD could be a nickname, as well.

Some phones have been using it, and unsurprisingly they come from Chinese companies. We also know other companies like Samsung, HTC, and LG  who are unlikely going to adopt CyanogenMod anytime soon. We can only report what rumors are saying, CyanogenMod is still CyanogenMod at the moment, and if a name change does happen there’s no way to know if it will happen a lot sooner than later. The functionality of the firmware and experiences may remain the same even if the name of the software changes.

Will CyanogenMod be really renamed to Lineage OS ?

We don’t know much else about the project or its status, and it’s safe to say that a lot of what’s happening is very fluid right now, regardless, so anything and everything could change in the decision making for its new name.
