HMD Global trademarks Asha, is this a comeback sign?!

Previously, Nokia has released a low-end phone series under the name “Asha”. The Nokia Asha was a range of low-end feature handphones produced by Nokia in 2011. The name “Asha” comes from the Hindi word meaning “hope”. Furthermore, the Asha phones specs usually include a QWERTY keypads and touch screen. After Microsoft acquired Nokia back in 2014, the Asha brand also transferred to the Redmond brand.

This January, we caught the news about a trademark application in the Intellectual Property Office of EU (EUIPO) with this name. In details, HMD Global had applied to put the name under their company. According to EUIPO, HMD can use the name for a new computer software platform for mobiles phones. Moreover, it can also be a wireless communication service for smartphones.

In 2018, HMD Global is planning to release many Nokia handsets. In the flagship field, we have the upcoming Nokia 9. For mid-range series, there is the new variant of Nokia 6 and global launch of Nokia 7. Besides, the Nokia 2 and Nokia 3 are the two representatives. On the other hand, the Finnish company also introduce the low-end handset Nokia 1 with Android Go OS. With the Asha phone, Nokia can now join in the feature battle.
