The new era of OnePlus

After sticking to the company’s path for quite a while now, CEO Pete Lau has confirmed that this new plan will be valid until at least 2021; mostly due to cost efficiency. Ultimately, this strategy equals OnePlus has no current plans for a follow up to the mid-range OnePlus X in 2015. From our understanding, it appears the company will also stick to selling just one device at a time.

That way, they can make sure stocks of previous models sell out entirely ahead of launches. According to one rep, this allows the company to always gain maximum exposure from its marketing strategies and efforts. Additionally, since OnePlus currently operates on very minimal profit margins, this new plan will also advocate any price cuts that are necessary. And the main reason is to reduce overall loss.

On a different note, the customer base of OnePlus wants the latest hardware at all times. So it’s reasonable for the company to do that. Speaking of hardware, one of many Pete Lau’s vision is to decrease the notch size in the next smartphone generations, while bezels design will also be in a decline. The purpose of this is to reach the ultimate goal of providing a full-screen experience.

Is this new strategy a smart move of OnePlus?

By sticking to just one device release at a time, the company’s growth is obviously limited but the overall strategy certainly seems to be paying off. After all, not only is the brand relatively successful in the unlocked smartphone segment over in the US, but it also had the best-selling premium smartphone in India during the first quarter of 2018. Thus, putting OnePlus in second place in terms of flagship shipments behind only Samsung.
