Check if Your Operator Offers Overseas Roaming Packages

Many carriers offer an international plan for travel abroad. Often, they are data-limiting packages and expensive, but they are still cheaper than the rates you would pay without an international package. Just check the online website, go to a store or call the customer hotline of your cell provider and ask for those specials.

Turn Off Data Roaming

Be aware of ‘Data Roaming’: this allows you using the internet in a foreign country and this can be very expensive because it is fee-based. If you want to avoid unnecessary cost then turn it off. You can find this option in your phone’s settings. Another way is to switch off your data use via mobile phone, but you can still go online via Wi-Fi spots which you can find in hotels, cafes and airports.

Buy a Local SIM card

This is probably the cheapest and easiest way to use a phone in your vacation. Consider buying and using a local prepaid  SIM card. You can buy them everywhere for little money: at the airport, in convenient stores, etc. but there is a disadvantage: this will give you a different phone number for the time you use the SIM card. But remember that not all phones will accept new SIM cards.
