According to this report of smartphone market Q2 2016, in this year’s second quarter, a total of 296 million Android smartphones has been delivered, making up 86.2% of total market share. The number of iPhones lagged behind a lot, with about 44 million units delivered, taking 12.9%. So, both Android and iOS make up of 99.1% of the market! Meanwhile, only 0.6% goes to Windows only, 0.1% for BlackBerry. The rest belongs to other systems. A total domination of Android and iOS!

Gartner also noted in the smartphone Q2 2016 report that revenue of high-end smartphones has reduced in this quarter, due to user’s anticipation for new models released in the latter half of the year. And rightly so: there are a lot of new flagships coming towards the end of this year! About feature phones, there is a drop of 14% compared to last year. All of the big markets have a general drop of 4.9%, except for Japan. On the other hand, rising markets, except Latin America, have recorded growth of 9.9%.

Smartphone market Q2 2016: Samsung on top

In this smartphone market Q2 2016 report, Samsung has displayed dominance over their competition during the period. With market shares of 10% more than Apple, who is in second place, Samsung has firmly established the title of largest smartphone manufacturer. Thanks to the A and J series of smartphones, Samsung managed to compete with Chinese manufacturers with their strong but cheaper smartphones, even gain control of some lost markets.

Apple, on the other hand, has experienced three consecutive quarter of slowing down demands, as sales declined 7.7% in Q2 of 2016, even in North America, their biggest market, as well as China, Western Europe, and some Asia-Pacific areas. This is truly alarming for Apple; hopefully, their future products can do something about that! Overall, only 5 of the top 10 vendors showed growth, including South Korea’s Samsung and 4 Chinese manufacturers (Huawei, Oppo, Xiaomi and BBK Communication Equipment), where Oppo had the biggest growth of 129%! Siri: The process of voice recognition and answering

First of all, Siri uses the Automatic speech recognition (ASR) to transcribe the speech of the owners into text. ASR technology is only capable of detecting short commands, dictations or questions. Mispronounced words also can’t be detected. Then, this assistant uses a natural language processing program to analyze the parts of speech, the phrases, the constituent parsing and dependency parsing of the text. The result comes out as something they call “parsed text”.

Secondly, Siri runs a question and intent analyzing program to study the parsed text, in order to detect user’s intentions, whether it’s a command, a question, or something else. Then, this assistant sends those data to the server in the cloud to find the solution. If the command can be handled locally in the device, the server will do nothing but recording the speech for further study. If external help is required to fulfill the command, the server will send those data to a 3rd-party website for better response.

Thirdly, when the answer is available, Siri will transform those data into written text in the same language as the input speech. After that, Siri runs text-to-speech technologies to transform the text into spoken language, which is the final result the user receives. It seems to be a complicated and long process for this assistant to finally come up with an answer. But in fact, these steps are quickly conducted and the answer often arrives after only a few seconds.

Apple reports have shown that Apple revenue was not derived mainly from iPhone anymore, so what is the new pathway for the US-based company?

Apple reports for third quarter of 2016 have been released and it is good news to all Apple lovers that they have done better than the second quarter. The numbers are much higher than expectations. For your interest, the Q2 results were not good, which may make Apple’s investors want to think again about their investment decisions. However, luckily the Q3 revenue has reported to increase and give stability to Apple’s business.

Now, let’s have a look at such Apple reports. First, the quarterly revenue is at $42.4 billion, down from $49.6 billion in Q3 2015. Nett income in the present quarter is $7.8 billion, reduced from $10.7 billion in Q3 2015. Gross margin of operations is at 38 percent, against 39.7 percent last year. It was a drop from its performance last year but fortunately,  the introduction of a larger screen iPhone saved Apple with much better performance than expectations after weak results in Q2 2016.

So what is happening recently? CFO of Apple said that Apple’s Services business had grown 19 percent annually and Appstore accounted for the highest part. He also pointed out that they had returned  $13 billion to investors through share re-purchases and dividends. As what we heard, people have spent more money on Appstore, which led Apple generate Apple’s stock by 7 percent to compensate what it had lost lately.
