In 2018, many chipset brands have reportedly begun their work for a 5G support chipset in smartphones. Today, Taiwanese MediaTek company finally announced their plan to launch their first 5G baseband chip – Helio M70! For now, MediaTek has already in contact with many smartphone manufacturers.

According to our sources, we have Nokia, NTT Docomo, China Mobile, and Huawei waiting in the list to establish the partnership with MediaTek. On the other hand, the Helio M70 is going to be among the first ones to support 5Gbps connections. As a result, it can become the head rival, fighting against Qualcomm, the Snapdragon X50 modem of which is doing the same but on its platform. Until now, many carriers have been testing 5G networks for a long time.

Last year, the final specs were released by 3GPP. In details, the Helio M70 supports 5G NR (new air interface), which conforms to the 3GPP Release 15 specification (official version announced on a monthly basis). Previously, Qualcomm Snapdragon X50 has been the world’s first 5G baseband. Moreover, the chipset can support a download speed of 5Gbps, and the Huawei’s Balong 5G01 released during MWC 2018. Interestingly, Huawei chip was the world’s first commercially available 5G chip based on the 3GPP standard, with a maximum downlink speed of 2.3Gbps.

Just last week, Qualcomm has officially unveiled their latest smartphone chipset – Snapdragon 850. Notably, this chip is the brand’s first exclusively targeted at laptop-style devices. Moreover, the Qualcomm Snapdragon has slightly overclocked 845 processor. However, it shows a good start for the Qualcomm brand in the laptop-style device segment. Today, we finally have more information about another fantastic chip – Qualcomm Snapdragon 1000.

According to the latest report, the Qualcomm 1000 is even more powerful than we expected. Firstly, the processor reportedly arrives with a TDP of up to 12 W. This is nearly double the TDP of the S850 and massive for ARM chip. In comparison, Intel’s popular U-series – e.g. 8250U and 8550U – are rated at 15 W with both have four cores with two threads each. While the Intel’s cores are enormous compared to the typical ARM core; their software isn’t great at using much more than eight cores.

So what should Qualcomm do to overcome this challenge? We have some possibility which might happen. Firstly, Qualcomm can use the larger Cortex-A76 core that ARM just made official. This power core promised a 35% performance boost on similar clock speeds (3.0 GHz vs. 2.8 GHz, a 7% increase). As a result, they mostly target the smartphone devices. Moreover, the clock speed is going to be higher on the laptop or 2-in-1 form factor. Additionally, the better cooling of the chipset also allows it to sustain those speeds for longer.
