Ever since January, a thread on the Apple discussion forum has been growing. It appears that the glass cover on the Apple iPhone X that protects the lens on both rear cameras has started cracking on many units. Now, some people might blame it on being careless, as when you drop the phone on a hard surface, the glass will crack. And that would make perfect sense except that the complaints came from iPhone X owners who affirm that they have never dropped their expensive handset.

So if that is not the case, what could cause the cracks to appear? Some put it on the temperature. Apple states that the iPhone X needs to be in an ambient temperature range of 32°F (0°C) to 95°F (35°C) while in use, and -4°F (-20°C) to 113°F (45°C) when at rest. However, some users have tried using the phone in colder conditions than those specified by Apple and found no damage whatsoever on their device. Perhaps this is something that is not weather related.

Apple knew bendgate would hit the iPhone 6 series

Recently, internal documents have surfaced in a recent court filing. According to this source, Apple was aware of the fact that the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus are more likely to bend than the previous iPhone 5s. The issue got pointed out by the company before the launch of the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus. Internal tests revealed the iPhone 6 is 3.3 times easier to bend than the iPhone 5s; and the 6 Plus with 7.2 times more.

“Touch disease” means a troubleshoot that causes the display to show a flickering grey bar at the top while the touchscreen would work intermittently, or even stop working altogether. In addition, Apple only acknowledged touch disease in November 2016, offering to replace issued phones for $149 (down from $349). It did not state the mentioned engineering changes to the public, but explained that touch disease only happens after iPhones are “dropped multiple times on a hard surface.”

Apple was required to turn over its internal testing documents as part of discovery in an ongoing class-action lawsuit filed against it because of these issues. The documents themselves remain under seal, but US District Court Judge Lucy Koh made some of the information in public. In short, the lawsuit alleges that Apple misled its customers about touch disease. Under the public eye, Apple has never admitted that the phones have this bending problem; despite the two models suffered from “touch disease” as a result of how easy they are to bend.

When will Apple finally admit its fault?

Despite these findings, Apple still maintained that there were no engineering issues with the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus. But according to court filings, this internal review showed that engineering changes were necessary to prevent touch disease. According to Bloomberg report, Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company – a partner of Apple – has already started production of the next generation iPhone chipset. This news directly confirmed previous reports from July 2017 that Apple would use the company for its new 7nm processor. The figure refers to the half-measurement of nodes in a chip, so a smaller number equals a denser chip. This could also mean more computing power and reduced energy consumption, which is crucial for any mobile devices.

In addition, this next generation chip could help Apple devices perform faster and operate longer between charges. This gives the company an advantage in a competitive market that has experienced dormant demand for new handsets. A lack of new hardware design modification, along with longer replacement rates and diminishing carrier support, have been blamed for the cooling. On a side note, Apple has managed to grow its global market share in the first quarter of 2018; despite a decline in shipments worldwide. However, Apple is not alone in this battle.

7nm chip

Samsung is now also the main competitor in this race; after news emerged in April that the company is preparing to start manufacturing the 7nm Snapdragon 855. This chip supposes to use 35% less power than current chips; while offering speed boosts of 40% and support 5G mobile connectivity. The upcoming Samsung Galaxy S10 might be the first device to run on this processor. On the other hand, Apple is set to take the stage at the Worldwide Developers Conference on June 4, where it will provide more details about this and the next software updates for iPhone, iPad, Mac, and other devices.

Apple makes USB-C to Lightning cable cheaper

It looks like Apple has made its USB-C to Lightning cable become cheaper than before. It’s quite rare for the company to reduce the prices of its accessories. What’s even weirder is that this move was announced just after we heard rumors saying Apple has decided to finally get rid of the use of USB-A in its iPhone and iPad charging adapters this year. To be specific, the 1m USB-C to Lightning cable allows faster charging than the one includes in the box if you have a compatible Apple device.

The initial price was a whopping $25 but now only costs $19. This isn’t the first time that we’ve seen the USB-C to Lightning Cable sell for that much. Back during the so-called #donglegate period, Apple reduced the prices of all USB-C accessories, including the USB-C to Lightning Cable. Interestingly, it goes the same for the USB-A to Lightning cable (the one you get in the box of your iPhone or iPad). However, the 2m version of USB-C to Lightning cable hasn’t received a price drop yet.

It continues to go for $35. With this planned move, rumors also suggest that the company will introduce a new 18W USB-C Power Adapter with a new design soon.
