If anyone logged on to Twitter account last night, they must have seen a “Keeping Your Account Secure” notice. To be honest, we don’t think that everyone went ahead and read the whole thing. However, what the popup window informs users about is quite scary. It basically indicates that the passwords of all 330 million Twitter users might be in danger in text form. This happened due to an internal bug that the company declares to have fixed now.

Furthermore, Twitter also claims that its investigation showed that there was no evidence that the unmasked passwords had violated. However, it still advised all users to change their passwords out of caution. According to the company rep, the bug occurred because of an issue in the hashing process of passwords storing. The hashing process replaces the actual password with a random set of numbers and letters that are kept in the Twitter system.

And from that, it can validate a user’s account information without showing their password. While the company has explained what happened and what the issue was, it hasn’t revealed how many users’ passwords may have possibly been compromised. We don’t even know the bug exposed the passwords for how long and how much time the company took to fix it. However, making the entire userbase to change their passwords indicates to a significant user number.
