Why is cheating in video games so hard to stop?
Cheating has always been a part of gaming. It really sucks the fun out of games, where you don’t have to make any effort. However, recently Bohemia Interactive has shared why it is so hard to counter cheating in video games.

Why is cheating in video games so hard to stop?
Money is power, they said. However, for years Valve Corporation and all its money was unable to do anything to a $20 program called LMAOBOX which ruined a lot of fun for Team Fortress 2 players. It has affected gameplay tremendously, and toss balance out of the window. Only recently, when some nice players passed the source code of the program to Valve, is the company able to counter this by incorporating the code to the Valve Anti-Cheat System. That was not an isolated incident, as the same problem has plagued the gaming industry for a while, yet companies are reluctant to talk about it.
However, recently Bohemia Interactive has shared some insights to the problem. The company’s lead producer, Eugen Harton, said that the openness gamers love of games is what makes it hard to detect cheaters. Most files required to run the game is on the players’ devices, and out of reach for developers. With that being the case, players can freely work with the game files to exploit bugs or flaws, automate process that usually require human inputs, and other offensive actions. Cheating in an open environment (customers’ PCs) is really hard to catch.
One solution is to run everything server side, but not many companies can afford to do so, since it requires a lot of money. For Bohemia Interactive, they rely mostly on honesty of players, and they have received notifications and flagging of incidents by players on their games like DayZ and Arma 3. Those 2 games have been affected heavily by cheating for a long time. However, those flaggings are most often false. So, the main solution relies upon the players, since it is up to them to not cheat and ruin the playing field for everyone.
Cheating: A never-ending battle
Cheating in old times is not that bad, mainly because it is a private issue. However, in this age, where e-sports and competitive gaming is the trend, cheating can be a real demise. We should try to play nice with each other, and stop cheating!
Tim Sweeney earns Lifetime Achievement Award!
At the end of last year, Hideo Kojima earned his deserved award for his contribution. Now, another one is going to earn his credit: Tim Sweeney is going to receive the Game Developers Choice Lifetime Achievement Award!

Tim Sweeney earns Lifetime Achievement Award!
Tim Sweeney, the CEO and founder of Epic Games, and also the creator of the Unreal Engine, will be honored with Lifetime Achievement Award at the 17th Game Developers Choice Awards (GDC). In its announcement, GDC said that Sweeney’s first game, ZZT, made an “explosion of user-created worlds” that many games have followed soon. Thanks to the game’s built-in scripting capabilities, players themselves can create virtually new stories and worlds they like!
His company, Epic Games, enjoyed more success later in the ’90s with games like Tyrian, Epic Pinball, and Jazz Jackrabbit, but one true breakthrough must be the release of Unreal in 1998. This release pushed the company big time. Although Unreal was not a real hit, it paved the way for Unreal Engine, used in almost every game today. Now, it has evolved into Unreal Engine 4, and it is still the integral part of any game in the market. Unreal Engine 4 is even adapted in non-gaming industries such as automotive, aviation, architecture, VR/AR, etc.

With this award, Sweeney will take his place among other Lifetime Achievement Award holders such as Todd Howard, Sid Meyer (Civilization anyone?), John Carmack, and Peter Molyneux. The award will be given on March 1, during the GDC ceremony. The event will be livestreamed on Twitch, and will start at 6:30pm PT. This year, the host will be Double Fine Productions’ chief Tim Schafer!
Tim Sweeney: A deserved award
With this so much deserved award, Tim Sweeney finally receives the recognition for his contribution to the gaming industry (and other industries as well). Hopefully he can continue his work to give better engines to the developers!

New Fire Emblem game is coming to the 3DS!
Recently, it has been all about the new Switch device for Nintendo. From the time it was first announced, the hype keeps intensifying each day. Recently, more details about this Nintendo Switch has been revealed, and it certainly is appealing. The first batch of pre-orders has been sold out quickly. As this new console is deemed the trump card of Nintendo to compete with Sony’s PlayStation and Microsoft’s Xbox, it is natural for people to think the 3DS will be in the backstage, or even worse, cease to exist. However, recently, a new game of a huge franchise is reported to be coming soon for the 3DS!
Nintendo has just announced an addition to the Fire Emblem franchise for the 3DS. The new game will be called Fire Emblem Echoes: Shadows of Valentia. Fire Emblem Echoes: Shadows of Valentia will be a story of two protagonists: Alm and Celica. In their world, there are two gods, one is peace-loving while the other is war-hungry. Although this is not a new settings, as many games have done it (even in the Fire Emblem franchise as well), Nintendo promises some twists on the story. Same goes for the combat system of this new Fire Emblem game, as there will be free roaming and “flexible character progression”, whatever that means. So, it will have a unique touch to it.
New Fire Emblem game means the 3DS will still stay for a while
With this new Fire Emblem game, the 3DS will have one more addition to its roster of games, and players will have a reason to stick with the device at least for a little while. If you own a 3DS, prepare to get this game on May 19!
Steam update adds Xbox Controller config support!
It is reported earlier that Steam will have support for external controllers soon. Recently, a new update has given Xbox Controller configuration support for Steam! Let’s take a look!

Steam update adds Xbox Controller config support!
Two weeks ago, Steam has rolled out a beta update which added configuration support for Xbox Controller (both 360 and One version). Actually, you can config any X-input controller. Now, that feature has been officially rolled out for everyone, in the latest Steam update. This is a great addition, because just last month, config for PS4 controllers were added. Now with Xbox Controller, we can officially use any external gamepad for playing Steam games.
In addition to that, this update also bring other controller updates for gamepads. Besides the Xbox Controller, the Steam client now supports more third-party PS4 gamepads, such as the ones from HORI, Madcatz, and Armor pads and flight sticks. With support for these gamepads now native to Steam, the recommended configurations specified for a game by the developer will now be classified based on controller type. More choices for players is always good, and this time Valve (the company behind Steam) has delivered.

Besides controller support, the latest Steam client also fixes several issues, including one annoying problem that would cause the client to hang when players wake up the computer from Sleep Mode. There were also some Windows 10 Insider Preview fixes, and Linux also got some attention too, with more than ten updates and bug fixes. There are also some menu changes, when you right click on your game in the Library. There will be no more “Delete local content” option, instead just the good old “Uninstall”. You can now also move game install folders from Properties > Local Files menu.
New Steam update is a great one!
With this new update, Steam has brought a lot more to the table. With almost all controllers supported, players will be very happy playing on Steam. Which games do you usually play with gamepads on Steam?

During this PSN Flash Sale, you can get Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix ($2), Devil May Cry HD Collection ($3), Beyond Good & Evil HD ($2), Battlefield 4 ($5), Shadow of the Colossus ($4), and more discounted games. Of course there are not as many as PS4, but the number is still very good, and the price is absolutely a steal.

For portable devices, the choices are more limited. We already mentioned Nidhogg, Bastion, and Risk of Rain, and they all support cross-buy. The same case goes for Hitman GO ($3). Persona 3 Portable (on PSP and Vita) is available at $5. There are also some PS1 classic games playable on PS3, Vita and PSP, such as Breath of Fire IV ($2.39), and Castlevania: Symphony of the Night ($4). Overall, there a lot of games to choose from, so hurry up and act!
