Nokia ReefShark 5G chipset unveiled

Based on the latest updates, Nokia has partnered with 30 carriers to work on the next-generation mobile network, 5G. In details, future mobile phones can equip the new ReefShark chipset to bring the 5G network. However, the chipset would go on sale separately, instead of built-in settings within a handset in previous rumours. The good news is the chipset and new mobile network can provide improved experience at a lower cost.

Certainly, the major advancement is that the throughput amount of each cell increases three times at least. Moreover, ReefShark reduces the size, cost and energy consumption (85%) at each cell site (network element). Meanwhile, it simultaneously boosts the intelligence and performance of massive MIMO antennas. Also, Nokia AirCase baseband module’s plug-in units already get market-leading 28 Gbps today, now increase up to 85 Gbps per module.

5G Networks must support massive billions of devices, machines and millions of network nodes. As a result, ReefShark enabled products allows a large number of base stations and antennas to have 5G network roll-out. Besides, there includes AI intelligence to put in designs for radio and baseband. If it is successful, ReefShark would be able to learn smart, rapid actions from the autonomous and cognitive network. According to the latest report, HMD Global has officially renewed the Nokia Express-on trademark. Previously, the label Xpress-on is the 4th trademark under HMD’s ownership. In details, the Xpress-On is the brand under which Nokia sold mobile devices’ front and back covers. Moreover, the Xpress-on trademark is listed as follows: “accessories for communications apparatus, namely microphones, speakers, coloured covers, housings, cases, antennas, batteries, battery chargers“.

For now, we can also look forward to more Nokia phone cases to come out under this label. On the other hand, we have high hope for an upcoming Nokia handset with a replaceable rear cover. HMD Global trademarks Asha, is this a comeback sign?!

Previously, Nokia has released a low-end phone series under the name “Asha”. The Nokia Asha was a range of low-end feature handphones produced by Nokia in 2011. The name “Asha” comes from the Hindi word meaning “hope”. Furthermore, the Asha phones specs usually include a QWERTY keypads and touch screen. After Microsoft acquired Nokia back in 2014, the Asha brand also transferred to the Redmond brand.

This January, we caught the news about a trademark application in the Intellectual Property Office of EU (EUIPO) with this name. In details, HMD Global had applied to put the name under their company. According to EUIPO, HMD can use the name for a new computer software platform for mobiles phones. Moreover, it can also be a wireless communication service for smartphones.

In 2018, HMD Global is planning to release many Nokia handsets. In the flagship field, we have the upcoming Nokia 9. For mid-range series, there is the new variant of Nokia 6 and global launch of Nokia 7. Besides, the Nokia 2 and Nokia 3 are the two representatives.
